Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue
Troy Andrews plays trombone like a lead guitar, fronting a New Orleans funk band with genuine brass-band muscle — Treme lineage at full blast.
Troy Andrews, known as Trombone Shorty, grew up in the Tremé neighbourhood of New Orleans in a family of musicians, performing in brass bands as a child and touring in Lenny Kravitz's horn section as a teenager. He plays trombone and trumpet, often using circular breathing and pushing the horn through effects and volume levels usually associated with electric guitar.
With his band Orleans Avenue he plays a mix of funk, rock, hip-hop rhythm and traditional New Orleans brass, a combination he has described as supafunkrock. The live shows lean on extended horn features and heavy backbeat grooves. Andrews has also appeared as an actor and musician on the HBO series Tremé and runs a foundation supporting music education in New Orleans.
