Childish Gambino is the musical project of Donald Glover, who grew up in Georgia and first became known as a writer on 30 Rock and an actor on Community before later creating the series Atlanta. Early releases including Camp and Because the Internet leaned on dense, joke-adjacent rapping over electronic production, but the 2016 album "Awaken, My Love!" turned sharply toward live funk, falsetto vocals and 1970s soul arrangements.
The single "Redbone" came from that record, and the 2018 standalone track "This Is America" — released with a widely discussed video — won Grammy Awards for Record and Song of the Year. Live, the project has tended toward large-scale staging and full band arrangements rather than a conventional rap show.
