T-Pain
Made Auto-Tune an instrument instead of a repair tool and spent a decade being blamed for it — then reminded everyone the voice underneath was always the point.
T-Pain is a rapper, singer and producer from Tallahassee, Florida, born Faheem Rashad Najm. He emerged in the mid-2000s and became one of the defining voices of the era through his heavy, melodic use of Auto-Tune, turning the pitch-correction software into a stylistic signature on hits including "I'm Sprung," "Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin')" and "Bartender." He was also in constant demand as a guest vocalist and hook writer, appearing on records by Kanye West, Flo Rida, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and many others.
After the sound he popularised became ubiquitous and then unfashionable, T-Pain spent years working against the caricature, most visibly with a 2014 NPR Tiny Desk performance sung without effects. He has continued releasing albums, produced for other artists, and won the first season of the US version of The Masked Singer.
