Absurdist pop-rap entrepreneurship — 'edamame' energy and meme-fluent hooks, shockingly great live from a performer who takes the joke completely seriously.
bbno$ is the recording name of Alexander Leon Gumuchian, born in Vancouver on June 30, 1995, to an Armenian father from Egypt and a Danish-Swiss mother. Homeschooled and a competitive swimmer through his teens, he later completed a kinesiology degree at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. A back injury ended his swimming ambitions and turned his attention toward music instead.
He began making beats on GarageBand in 2014 with a group of friends who called themselves the Broke Boy Gang, then started posting solo tracks to SoundCloud in 2016 under the name bbnomula. He built an outsized following in China, where a video of TFBoys member Jackson Yee dancing to his song 'Yoyo Tokyo' helped him sell out his first headlining tours there.
His catalogue built quickly through the late 2010s: the Yung Gravy collaboration Baby Gravy and his debut album Bb Steps both landed in 2017, followed by Recess in 2019. That record included 'Lalala', featuring Y2K, marketed through Tinder, Instagram, TikTok and Craigslist; the song went on to sell triple platinum in the US and pass a billion streams, with 'edamame', alongside Rich Brian, extending his reach further.
His music mixes trap and pop-rap production with deliberately silly, hook-heavy writing, and he has been open about treating the project as a business he runs himself. Live, he performs with considerably more energy and commitment than the comic tone of the records might suggest, and he has since won the Juno Fan Choice Award in both 2025 and 2026.
