Every woman, one voice — funk and soul royalty whose catalog with Rufus and beyond never quits, still one of the great living instruments.

Chaka Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens in Chicago and first reached a wide audience in the 1970s as the singer of Rufus, the funk band behind "Tell Me Something Good" and "Sweet Thing." Her solo career began later in that decade and produced "I'm Every Woman" and "I Feel for You," the latter a Prince composition.

Her voice is a broad, powerful contralto with a strong jazz instinct, and she has recorded across funk, soul, disco, R&B and jazz standards, as well as guesting widely on other artists' records. She has remained an active performer for decades and is regularly cited as an influence by singers working in soul and pop.
