Shaggy, born Orville Richard Burrell in Kingston, Jamaica, is a dancehall artist who moved to Brooklyn as a teenager and served in the United States Marine Corps before recording. He is identified immediately by his deep, gravelly toasting voice, usually set against a lighter-toned guest singer on the chorus. His early hits included "Oh Carolina" and "Boombastic," and the 2000 album Hot Shot produced "It Wasn't Me" and "Angel," both of which topped charts internationally. He has continued recording and touring since, including a collaborative album with Sting, and his catalogue sits consistently at the pop end of dancehall and reggae.
