Yellowcard
Violin-powered pop-punk — 'Ocean Avenue' at the actual ocean, and the violin still carries the hooks.
Yellowcard formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1997 and became one of the few pop-punk bands to build its sound around a violin, played by Sean Mackin, whose lines sit alongside the guitars rather than behind them. The 2003 album Ocean Avenue, their major-label debut, carried the title track and 'Only One' and remains their best-known work. Later records included Lights and Sounds, Paper Walls and When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes. Ryan Key handles lead vocals. The band announced a farewell in the mid-2010s before returning to activity, and their catalogue still leans on fast tempos, layered harmonies and Mackin's melodic counterpoint.
