Shinedown
Brent Smith's enormous voice fronting two decades of rock-radio anthems, delivered with genuine showmanship rather than autopilot — 'Simple Man' cover included.
Shinedown formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2001 around vocalist Brent Smith, and have kept a stable line-up for most of their career with guitarist Zach Myers, bassist Eric Bass and drummer Barry Kerch. Their debut, Leave a Whisper, arrived in 2003 and paired post-grunge riffing with Smith's wide, gritty tenor, a combination that carried through The Sound of Madness and the records that followed.
Songs such as "45", "Second Chance" and "Sound of Madness" became rock-radio staples, and the band's version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" remains one of their best-known recordings. Later albums, including Attention Attention and Planet Zero, leaned further into arena-scaled arrangements and loosely conceptual sequencing, with Bass handling production duties.
