Late-'90s funk-metal cut short by tragedy — hyperactive, punk-fast, and still fondly guarded by everyone who caught them the first time.

Snot formed in Santa Barbara, California, in 1995, built around singer Lynn Strait, previously the bassist for local punk band Lethal Dose, and guitarist Mikey Doling, formerly of Kronix. Shows around Los Angeles built the band a following that led to a deal with Geffen Records. Snot belonged to a wave of American bands in the late 1990s mixing hardcore punk speed with funk basslines and hip-hop-inflected vocals.

Fronted by Strait, the group played fast, aggressive songs that owed as much to punk as to the metal scene they were grouped with. Their only album with Strait, Get Some, was released in May 1997 with producer T-Ray, and the band toured the 1998 Ozzfest run before starting work on a follow-up record that Strait never finished.

On December 11, 1998, Strait was killed when a truck struck his car, also killing his dog, Dobbs, and the band broke up. A tribute album, Strait Up, followed in 2000, with vocal tracks completed by friends including singers from Slipknot, Korn, System of a Down, Soulfly and Limp Bizkit, among others, and it reached number 56 on the Billboard 200.

A live album, Alive!, reached number 12 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart in 2002. Snot's small recorded output and short career have kept the band a reference point for listeners of the era's funk-metal and nu-metal scenes, and surviving members have revisited the material repeatedly since, reuniting in 2007, 2008, 2014 and again in 2024 with new vocalists standing in for Strait.
