Spooky-kid nu-metal with detuned bounce and a goth streak the genre mostly abandoned — 'Loco'-era heaviness back from the grave.
Coal Chamber formed in Los Angeles in 1993, fronted by vocalist Dez Fafara. They were among the first wave of nu-metal bands signed to Roadrunner Records, and their sound combined downtuned, bouncing guitar riffs with gothic and industrial touches — heavy makeup, dark imagery and a theatrical streak that set them apart from their peers. "Loco" remains their best-known song.
The band released several albums in the late 1990s and early 2000s before splitting, with Fafara going on to front DevilDriver. Coal Chamber later reunited and returned to touring and recording.
