Soulfly was formed in 1997 by Max Cavalera after his departure from Sepultura, and has operated since then with a rotating lineup around him. The early records paired down-tuned groove metal with tribal percussion, Brazilian and world-music elements and guest vocalists from the nu-metal and hip-hop worlds; later albums shifted toward a harder thrash and death metal attack.

Based in Arizona, the band has released a long run of albums and toured consistently for close to three decades. Cavalera's roared vocals and the emphasis on heavy, mid-paced riffing remain the constants across the catalogue.
