Pantera formed in Arlington, Texas, in the early 1980s, initially as a glam-inflected metal band, before reshaping themselves around vocalist Phil Anselmo into one of the defining groove metal acts of the 1990s. The classic line-up paired Anselmo with guitarist Dimebag Darrell, drummer Vinnie Paul and bassist Rex Brown. Their sound centred on Dimebag's sharp, harmonically squealing riffs and a rhythm section that traded thrash speed for heavy mid-tempo swing, with Anselmo shifting between bellow and snarl.
Records including Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven carried the band from clubs to arenas. Pantera ended in the early 2000s; both Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul have since died. Anselmo and Brown later revived the name with other musicians.
