Gatecreeper
Arizona death metal with a Swedish buzzsaw tone and hardcore pacing — economical, extremely heavy, and one of the revival's flagship names.
Gatecreeper formed in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2013 around vocalist Chase Mason, releasing a self-titled four-song EP the following year and then a run of splits with Take Over and Destroy, Homewrecker, Outer Heaven, Scorched, and Young and in the Way as the lineup took shape.
The band builds on the Swedish death metal template, the distorted, buzzsaw guitar tone associated with Entombed and Dismember, while keeping songs short and pulling structural ideas from hardcore and crust punk. Doom-tempo passages and melodic leads turn up alongside the faster material, with riffs, tempo shifts and momentum favoured over technical display.
Their debut full-length, Sonoran Depravation, arrived on Relapse Records in 2016. The follow-up, Deserted, came out in 2019 and was named one of the year's best metal albums by Loudwire, while the 2021 EP An Unexpected Reality was ranked among Revolver's best albums of that year.
A third album, Dark Superstition, followed in 2024. Gatecreeper have toured extensively with both metal and hardcore bands, and in 2025 supported Arch Enemy's European tour alongside Eluveitie and Amorphis.
