Cavalera is the project of brothers Max and Iggor Cavalera, who founded Sepultura in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in the mid-1980s and drove the band's move from thrash toward the tribal-inflected groove metal of its 1990s work. Both left Sepultura, Max in 1996 and Iggor a decade later, and have worked together since in various configurations.
Under the Cavalera name they have re-recorded early Sepultura albums and performed those records in full live, alongside newer material. Max also fronts Soulfly, and the two brothers previously toured together as Cavalera Conspiracy.
