Sepultura
Brazil's metal export to the world — Roots-era tribal thrash that reshaped heavy music's map.
Sepultura formed in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 1984 around brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, and grew from raw death-tinged thrash on their earliest records into the tighter, faster attack of Beneath the Remains and Arise. By the early 1990s the band had become one of the most widely known metal groups to emerge from outside the United States and Europe.
The 1993 album Chaos A.D. slowed the tempos into a heavier groove and brought in percussion and political lyrics, and Roots pushed further, incorporating Brazilian percussion and a recorded collaboration with the Xavante people. Max Cavalera left in 1996 and Derrick Green took over on vocals, with the band continuing to record and tour for decades afterwards. Their sound remains built on downtuned riffing, tribal-leaning drum patterns and shouted vocals.
