Avenged Sevenfold formed in Huntington Beach, California in 1999, and moved over their first few records from metalcore toward a broader hard rock and heavy metal sound built on twin-guitar harmonies, theatrical arrangements and M. Shadows's raw-edged vocals. City of Evil and the self-titled album brought them to a mainstream audience, and songs including 'Bat Country' became staples of rock radio.
The band continued after the death of drummer Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan in 2009, and later records have grown increasingly ambitious in structure and length, culminating in the progressive, concept-driven Life Is But a Dream. They remain one of the larger American metal bands of their generation, playing arenas and headlining festivals worldwide.
