The Dirty Heads
Huntington Beach beach-rap that never pretends to be anything heavier: acoustic reggae bounce, sunburnt hooks, and a live set built for the last hour of daylight.
The Dirty Heads began with Jared Watson and Dustin Bushnell writing together in Huntington Beach, Watson rapping and Bushnell handling acoustic guitar and sung hooks, and grew into a full band with bass, drums and hand percussion behind them. The songs sit somewhere between hip-hop verses and reggae downstrokes, with the guitar kept clean and the choruses built to be sung back.
Their widest-reaching song remains "Lay Me Down," recorded with Rome Ramirez of Sublime with Rome, which reached the top of Billboard's Alternative Songs chart in 2010 and stayed there for a long run. It came from Any Port in a Storm, and the band has kept a steady album-and-touring cycle going since.
