Slug and Ant's Rhymesayers cornerstone — conversational, self-lacerating rap over dusty, patient loops, still the blueprint for Midwest underground hip-hop's emotional honesty.

Sean Daley and Derek Turner met at Washburn High School in Minneapolis and began performing together, first as Slug and D-Spawn, cycling through names like Mental Subjects and Urban Atmosphere before settling on Atmosphere. Slug was introduced to producer Ant through the rapper Musab, and Spawn left the group after their debut album, Overcast!, came out.

Ant builds his tracks from dusty, sample-based boom bap loops, patient and unhurried. Slug's writing sits over them in a conversational tone, unsparing about relationships, drinking, family and self-doubt, treating those subjects with as much attention as rap technique itself.

Slug, Ant and other local rappers formed a collective called Headshots, which grew into the label Rhymesayers Entertainment. Overcast! reached a wider audience through college radio airplay for the single 'Scapegoat,' while Slug sharpened his live show at Minneapolis clubs including First Avenue and 7th Street Entry.

Steady touring, including the twenty-one date Ford One Tour that took the group to the East Coast for the first time, let Slug quit his day jobs at a record store and a department store. The two EPs Ford and Lucy were combined into the 2001 release Lucy Ford: The Atmosphere EPs, originally meant only for tour sale before demand pushed it to wider release. The group's catalog has since grown to thirteen studio albums and ten EPs.
