Early djent architects out of Minneapolis — eight-string polyrhythms and huge grooves whose low end still lands harder live than any recording has managed to capture.

After the Burial was founded in Minneapolis in 2004 by Trent Hafdahl, Justin Lowe, Nick Wellner and Greg Erickson, all of whom met in high school. Their debut, Forging a Future Self, was recorded in late 2005 and self-distributed in 2006 without a formal label deal, before the band signed to Sumerian Records, where all but one of their albums have since been released.

The lineup has turned over repeatedly. Erickson and Wellner left early on, vocalists and drummers changed multiple times, bassist Lee Foral eventually departed, and Justin Lowe, who had handled rhythm guitar and much of the band's drum programming, left the group before his death in 2015. Trent Hafdahl is the sole remaining founding member.

Rareform, recorded in 2008 with vocalist Anthony Notarmaso replacing Grant Luoma, was re-released the following year with Notarmaso's vocals and extra live footage, and the band later marked its tenth anniversary with a dedicated tour. In Dreams followed in 2010, supported by tours with Winds of Plague and a headlining run billed as Crush Em All.

The band's sound pairs metalcore and deathcore intensity with extended-range guitar and syncopated, rhythmically displaced riffing, and it has kept expanding through EPs like This Life Is All We Have, released in 2013 with re-mastered older tracks alongside new material.
