Minneapolis band whose ragged shows and Paul Westerberg's broken-hearted writing made them a byword for self-sabotage and great songs in equal measure.
The Replacements formed in Minneapolis in 1979 with Paul Westerberg, brothers Bob and Tommy Stinson, and drummer Chris Mars. They started as a fast, sloppy hardcore-adjacent band on Twin/Tone and moved toward sharper songwriting on "Let It Be" and "Tim", which carried "Unsatisfied", "Bastards of Young" and "Left of the Dial".
Bob Stinson was dismissed in 1986, and the band broke up in 1991 after two more records. Their shows were unpredictable by design: they would abandon songs mid-verse or play requests badly, and a drunken 1986 appearance on "Saturday Night Live" got them banned. Westerberg and Tommy Stinson reunited for touring in 2013 and 2014.
