Motion City Soundtrack formed in Minneapolis in 1997, built around vocalist and guitarist Justin Pierre and guitarist Joshua Cain. The band's sound combines pop-punk tempos and power-pop melody with a prominent Moog synthesizer line, a texture that set it apart from many of its contemporaries on Epitaph Records.

Commit This to Memory, produced by Mark Hoppus and released in 2005, remains the band's best-known record, with "Everything Is Alright" as its signature song. Pierre's lyrics deal frequently with anxiety, addiction and self-doubt, delivered in a rapid, conversational style. The group broke up in 2016 before reuniting a few years later to tour again.
