Gideon formed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 2008 and spent its early years on Facedown Records, playing melodic metalcore with roots in the Christian hardcore scene. The band later signed to Equal Vision and shifted toward a heavier, groove-driven sound drawing on nu-metal and hardcore, with fewer clean vocals and more emphasis on breakdowns. That change divided some of the earlier audience but widened the band's reach, and the current live show leans on the newer material.
