Divisive by design — nu-metal bounce, deathcore weight, and Frankie Palmeri saying the unsayable, engineered to start arguments and pits alike.

Emmure formed in New Fairfield, Connecticut, in 2003, after singer Frankie Palmeri, from Queens, New York, met brothers Joe and Ben Lionetti through an internet message board and travelled to Connecticut to start rehearsing. The band's name references immurement, a form of execution by sealing someone in. The lineup solidified with bassist Dan Steindler and guitarist Jesse Ketive before the group spent several years playing local shows and recording demos.

After a 2006 EP, The Complete Guide to Needlework, Emmure signed to Victory Records and released Goodbye to the Gallows in 2007. The label carried them through The Respect Issue, Felony and Speaker of the Dead over the following years, releases that paired breakdown-driven heaviness with bounce rhythms and rap-inflected phrasing borrowed from nu-metal.

Frankie Palmeri's vocals and blunt, often confrontational lyrics have been central to the band's identity and to the arguments that follow it, with critics singling out his combative public persona as part of what separates Emmure from other bands in the genre.

The band went through a near-total lineup change in the mid-2010s, with Palmeri, born 1986, continuing as the only original member. Emmure released Slave to the Game and Eternal Enemies through Victory before leaving the label for SharpTone in 2016, putting out Look at Yourself in 2017 and Hindsight in 2020, and has kept recording and touring with newer personnel since.
