Emmure formed in Connecticut in 2003 and built a following through the late 2000s metalcore and deathcore scene, releasing a steady run of albums that paired breakdown-driven heaviness with bounce rhythms and rap-inflected phrasing borrowed from nu-metal. Frankie Palmeri's vocals and blunt, often confrontational lyrics have been central to the band's identity and to the arguments that follow it.

The group went through a near-total lineup change in the mid-2010s, with Palmeri continuing as the only original member alongside new personnel, and has kept recording and touring since. Live, Emmure leans on low-tuned, percussive riffing and the crowd movement it provokes rather than on melody or polish.
