Underoath formed in Ocala, Florida in the late 1990s and were originally a metalcore band with black metal leanings before a series of lineup changes reshaped them. The arrival of vocalist Spencer Chamberlain alongside drummer and clean singer Aaron Gillespie set the template most listeners know: screamed and sung vocals traded across the same song, over riffs that swing between hardcore aggression and melodic post-hardcore.

The band's mid-2000s records brought them a large audience within the Christian and mainstream heavy scenes alike, and later albums grew progressively darker and more electronic in texture. Underoath broke up around 2013 and reunited a few years later, resuming touring and recording. Their live show leans on dynamics, with Chamberlain and Gillespie's contrasting voices carrying much of the weight.
