Norma Jean formed in Douglasville, Georgia, originally performing as Luti-Kriss before adopting the current name around the turn of the 2000s. Their debut, Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child, arrived in 2002 and became an early reference point for a heavier, more dissonant strain of metalcore.

The band's sound is built on lurching tempo shifts, atonal guitar work and abrasive vocals, closer to mathcore and noise-rock than to melodic metalcore. Cory Brandan has handled vocals since 2003, and the group has continued releasing albums across more than two decades of shifting lineups.
