Atreyu formed in Orange County, California in 1998 and became one of the more visible American metalcore bands of the early 2000s. Their sound combined screamed verses with sung choruses, twin-guitar harmonies drawn from melodic death metal, and a rock sensibility that grew more pronounced over later albums.

The band's name comes from a character in The Neverending Story. Alongside groups from the same period, Atreyu helped establish the melodic template that much of the genre followed, and they have continued recording and touring through several line-up changes.
