The Ghost Inside
A band whose survival story is inseparable from the music's insistence on pushing forward — melodic hardcore as literal testament.
The Ghost Inside formed in El Segundo, California, in 2004 under the name A Dying Dream, releasing an EP before settling on The Ghost Inside and issuing a debut album, Fury and the Fallen Ones. A second record, Returners, arrived in 2010, the year drummer Andrew Tkaczyk joined after playing in For the Fallen Dreams.
The band became one of the more prominent American melodic metalcore acts of the following decade, pairing hardcore's rhythmic weight with sung and shouted choruses, and steering its lyrics toward perseverance rather than nihilism, a tone that would later take on unplanned weight.
Epitaph Records signed the band in 2012, the year of Get What You Give, produced by A Day to Remember's Jeremy McKinnon and the group's first album to chart on the Billboard 200. Dear Youth followed in 2014, the same year founding guitarist Aaron Brooks departed, leaving vocalist Jonathan Vigil as the sole original member.
On November 19, 2015, the band's tour bus collided head-on with a tractor trailer on U.S. Highway 180 near El Paso, Texas, killing both drivers. Ten people aboard survived, several with critical injuries: Vigil, guitarist Zach Johnson and Tkaczyk were hospitalized, and Tkaczyk lost a leg after a ten-day coma. Guitarist Chris Davis joined the band the following year.
The band did not perform for several years, returning with a self-titled album in 2018 and a gradual resumption of touring. Two further studio albums have followed, including Searching for Solace in 2024, the band's sixth full-length release.
