Counterparts formed in Hamilton, Ontario in 2007 and have been one of the more durable Canadian melodic hardcore bands of their era. The group pairs fast, riff-driven hardcore with melodic metalcore elements, and vocalist Brendan Murphy's lyrics tend toward unsparing writing about grief, guilt and personal failure.

Their lineup has changed repeatedly over the years, with Murphy the constant. The band has toured widely across North America and Europe, and is often grouped with the wave of hardcore acts that emerged in southern Ontario in the late 2000s.
