A Wilhelm Scream
New Bedford's technical-punk lifers, stacking dizzying twin-guitar leads on top of full-throttle melodic hardcore. A Fest institution and one of its most reliable pits.
A Wilhelm Scream trace back to 1993 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, when drummer Trevor Reilly, guitarist John Carvalho and bassist Jonathan Teves started playing together. The band cycled through the names Koen and Smackin' Isaiah before settling on A Wilhelm Scream, a nod to the well-worn film sound effect. Each name change tracked new members joining and the band's sound maturing, from a Nirvana-inspired demo toward something faster and more melodic.
The band works in melodic hardcore and skate punk, distinguished by unusually intricate playing: fast twin-guitar harmonies, frequent tempo shifts and busy basslines sit under hoarse, shouted vocals. Critics have placed them alongside Strung Out, Hot Water Music, Propagandhi and Strike Anywhere, though A Wilhelm Scream's arrangements tend toward more overt technicality than any of those bands.
Early releases came through Tank Records, the label guitarist Carvalho and bassist Teves ran themselves, including the split EP 6:6:6 and the debut album The Way to a Girl's Heart Is Through Her Boyfriend's Stomach. A tense second album, Benefits of Thinking Out Loud, followed before the band settled into its current name and signed with Nitro Records, where Mute Print pushed the arrangements even further.
The recording of Benefits of Thinking Out Loud strained relationships within the band, and Carvalho left afterward, replaced by guitarist Christopher Levesque. The lineup that emerged from that period is the one associated with the band's most technically ambitious material.
A Wilhelm Scream remain tied to the punk underground rather than mainstream crossover, building their following through persistent touring and a reputation for dense, technically demanding live sets that replicate the record's speed and precision without losing energy.
