Small Brown Bike formed in 1996 in Michigan, built around brothers Mike and Ben Reed alongside Travis Dopp and Dan Jaquint. They released records through No Idea and Lookout!, and became part of the late-1990s and early-2000s Midwestern strain of melodic hardcore and post-hardcore before breaking up in the mid-2000s and later reuniting.
Their songs move between restrained, ringing passages and full-volume choruses, with shouted, throat-worn vocals often traded between members and group shouts at the peaks. The band shares clear common ground with the Gainesville gruff-punk scene, and has toured and recorded in that orbit.
