Samiam
Berkeley's bridge between 90s melodic punk and emo — Jason Beebout's ache over big, rolling hooks. Aging beautifully and criminally underrated.
Samiam formed in Berkeley, California in 1988, emerging from the East Bay punk scene around 924 Gilman Street; guitarist Sergie Loobkoff and singer Jason Beebout have anchored the band across its various line-ups. After early records on independent labels, the group signed to Atlantic and released Clumsy in 1994, one of a number of Bay Area punk bands picked up by majors in that period.
The band's sound pairs fast, melodic punk with mid-tempo, minor-key songwriting and Beebout's rough, plaintive vocals, an approach frequently cited as a precursor to later emo and melodic hardcore. Samiam has continued to record and tour intermittently for more than three decades, with a particularly steady following in Europe.
