Green Day formed in the East Bay in 1989 around Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt, with Tré Cool joining on drums soon after. Early records came out on Lookout!, and the move to a major label for 'Dookie' put fast, hook-driven pop punk on mainstream radio.
The band spent the 2000s working on a bigger scale. 'American Idiot' was structured as a rock opera and later adapted for the stage, and 'Warning' and 'Nimrod' had already pushed at acoustic and folk-tinged material. Live, the set still leans on the short, loud songs, with Armstrong pulling fans onstage to play along.
