British indie-pop with a sharp lyrical edge — bright arrangements carrying much darker subject matter, Croydon storytelling on the rise.

Rachel Chinouriri was born at Kingston Hospital in 1998, shortly after her parents moved to England from Zimbabwe. She grew up from the age of three in the Forestdale area of Croydon, in a Christian household alongside four older siblings who had been born in Zimbabwe. She attended the BRIT School and, as a teenager, found herself drawn to the records of Daughter and Lily Allen.

She started writing songs at seventeen, recording them on a cheap microphone and uploading them to SoundCloud from her mother's laptop. Her first gig was supporting Celeste at a London members' club in 2017. A year later she began releasing music on streaming platforms properly, and her song "So My Darling", written at seventeen, picked up a special play on BBC Radio 1.

Her guitar-led indie pop sets plainly worded difficulty against bright, melodic production. Songs move through grief, mental health, family and identity, including one written about her own thoughts on the afterlife. The 2019 EP Mama's Boy, released to strong reviews, established this pairing of light arrangement and heavy subject matter early in her career.

Signed to Parlophone, she released the mini-album Four° in Winter in 2021, whose single "Give Me a Reason" earned an Ivor Novello nomination for Best Contemporary Song. A second EP, Better Off Without, followed in 2022, the same year an acoustic re-release of "So My Darling" spread widely on TikTok. Her debut studio album, What a Devastating Turn of Events, arrived in 2024, with the EP Little House following in 2025.

Chinouriri has spoken often about being a Black British artist working in indie music, pushing to have her songs heard on their own terms rather than sorted into expectations built around race or genre.
