Johnny Moped
Shambolic first-wave punk once featuring Captain Sensible and Chrissie Hynde, still gloriously unpolished — Croydon legend status fully secured.
Johnny Moped formed in Croydon in the mid-1970s around singer Paul Halford, who took the band's name as his own. In their earliest incarnations the line-up included Ray Burns, later known as Captain Sensible of The Damned, and Chrissie Hynde passed through before forming The Pretenders. The band signed to Chiswick Records and released the album Cycledelic in 1978.
Their music sits between pub rock and first-wave punk: fast, loose, played with more enthusiasm than precision, and delivered in Halford's strangled bark. They were never a commercially successful group, and their reputation rests largely on the affection of contemporaries and on a small run of records that remain genuinely odd. The band has reformed and continued to play in later years.
