Slaughter & The Dogs

1 festival played

Wythenshawe's glam-punk originals, on the bill at the gig that famously started Manchester punk — boot-boy anthems still swinging.

Slaughter & The Dogs formed in Wythenshawe, south Manchester, in the mid-1970s around vocalist Wayne Barrett and guitarist Mick Rossi. The name combined David Bowie's Diamond Dogs with Mick Ronson's Slaughter on 10th Avenue, and that glam-rock influence stayed audible in their music: fast, tuneful punk with singalong choruses and a strong local, working-class identity.

Their early singles included "Cranked Up Really High", and their debut album Do It Dog Style appeared in 1978. The band has broken up and reformed several times over the decades, with Barrett and Rossi at the centre of most line-ups.
