The Offspring formed in Orange County, California, in 1984, with Dexter Holland on vocals and Noodles on guitar. They spent years in the Southern California punk underground before Smash, released by Epitaph in 1994, became one of the best-selling independent records ever made and helped push punk back into the mainstream alongside Green Day.

Their sound combines fast melodic hardcore with strong pop hooks, and later records leaned further into humour and novelty on singles such as "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)" and "Why Don't You Get a Job?". The band has continued to tour and record for decades, and its catalogue is heavily weighted toward familiar radio songs.
