Rory Rodriguez's falsetto turned a metalcore band into something closer to devastating synth-pop with guitars — grief-heavy songwriting that broke the scene's mold.

Dayseeker came together in Orange, near Anaheim, in 2012, when Rory Rodriguez and Alex Polk, both formerly of Arms Like Yours, joined with Matt Steenstra, Andrew Sharp and Mike Karle from the band Southern Lights. They signed to InVogue Records in 2013 and released their debut, What It Means to Be Defeated, later that year, reissuing it in 2014 with additional acoustic tracks produced by Tom Denney.

A run of lineup changes followed: Polk and Sharp left in 2016, and the band signed to Spinefarm Records the same year. Their second and third albums, Origin (2015) and Dreaming Is Sinking /// Waking Is Rising (2017), came either side of that shift, with Sleeptalk following in 2019 and later reissued with reworked acoustic versions of its opening tracks.

The current lineup, with Rodriguez fronting the band alongside bassist Ramone Valerio and drummer Zac Mayfield, has released six studio albums in total, most recently Creature in the Black Night in October 2025.

Over that stretch the band moved away from heavier metalcore arrangements toward something more spacious and synth-driven, keeping the emotional weight of the genre while shedding much of its aggression. Songwriting that deals with loss, grief and family has carried the group's audience well beyond the Southern California scene it started in.
