Chiodos formed in Davison, Michigan, in 2001 and became one of the more recognisable post-hardcore acts of the mid-2000s. The band's music paired screamed and clean vocals with piano and keyboard parts, abrupt tempo changes and dramatic, theatrical arrangements — closer to the ornate end of screamo than to straightforward hardcore.

Craig Owens's wide-ranging, often nasal vocal delivery was the group's most identifiable feature. He left the band in 2009 and returned several years later, a cycle that has been mirrored by other departures and reunions across the group's history. Their earlier albums remain the touchstone for listeners who followed the scene during its peak years.
