Save Ferris formed in Orange County, California in 1995, part of the third-wave ska boom that ran through Southern California in the mid-1990s. Fronted by singer Monique Powell, the band paired horn-driven ska-punk arrangements with pop songwriting, and Powell's voice — big, brassy and closer to swing and torch singing than punk shouting — became the group's identifying feature.
The band's cover of Dexys Midnight Runners' "Come On Eileen" gave them their widest exposure, and their original material moved between upstroke ska, punk tempos and horn-section pop. After a long dormancy, Powell revived the name and has continued to tour and record under it.
