Bleeding Through
Keyboard-shadowed, black-metal-tinged metalcore from the peak of the Orange County scene — symphonic menace layered over mosh-part brutality.
Bleeding Through formed in Orange County, California, in 1999, growing out of an earlier hardcore punk band called Breakneck that vocalist Brandan Schieppati and guitarist Javier Van Huss had started the previous year, both having also played in Eighteen Visions. The new name was explained as a reflection that everyone bleeds through life the same, regardless of race or belief.
Schieppati balanced the two bands for a while, recording the independent albums Dust to Ashes (2001) and Portrait of the Goddess (2002) with Bleeding Through before leaving Eighteen Visions to focus on the newer group full-time, drawing early inspiration from hardcore punk and Swedish melodic death metal alike.
The band was part of the Southern California metalcore wave of the early 2000s, releasing records through Trustkill and later Rise Records. Their sound distinguished itself with keyboards and black-metal-influenced tremolo passages layered over hardcore breakdowns and melodic death metal riffing.
Signing to Trustkill in 2003, the band released its breakthrough album, This Is Love, This Is Murderous, and drew wider media attention that December after a van crash involving the group was accidentally caught on live television. The Truth (2006) and Declaration (2008) followed on the same label, though Declaration's release was marred by financial hardship and conflict with Trustkill.
The band then signed to Rise Records in 2009, releasing Bleeding Through (2010) and The Great Fire (2012) before disbanding in 2014. They reunited three years later, put out Love Will Kill All (2018) on SharpTone Records, and released their latest album, Nine, in 2025; the current lineup, alongside Schieppati, includes drummer Derek Youngsma, keyboardist Marta Demmel and guitarists John Arnold and Brandon Richter, and the band has sold more than 400,000 albums worldwide.
