Ice Nine Kills formed in the Boston area in the early 2000s, initially as a ska-punk band, and gradually moved into metalcore under vocalist Spencer Charnas, who has remained the constant member. The group's name comes from Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle.

The band is best known for building albums around horror and literary source material: The Silver Scream and its sequel devote individual songs to specific films, from slasher franchises to Stephen King adaptations. Live performances lean into that concept with costumes, props and staged sequences. Musically the songs combine melodic clean choruses with screamed vocals, palm-muted riffing and orchestral or spoken-word interludes.
