Armand Van Helden
The filter-house architect — 'U Don't Know Me', 'My My My' and half the Duck Sauce catalogue, still built for a room that wants to sweat.
Armand Van Helden grew up in Boston and made his name in New York in the mid-90s, cutting up disco and funk records for the city's house labels. His remixes did as much as his own tracks to shape the sound: the reworking of Tori Amos's "Professional Widow" that topped the UK chart in 1997, and a version of the Sneaker Pimps' "Spin Spin Sugar" that fed directly into UK speed garage. "The Funk Phenomena" came out of the same period.
Since 2009 he has also worked as Duck Sauce with A-Trak, a project built on cheap-sounding vocal loops and the 1979 Boney M. sample behind "Barbra Streisand". His DJ sets stay close to house tempo and lean on vocal hooks.
