'Flavor of the Weak' and a catalog of crunchy Y2K pop-rock — still flying the flannel, with the TRL-era hooks fully intact.

American Hi-Fi formed in Boston in 1998, initially performing under the name BMX Girl before adopting a new name suggested by the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards. Frontman Stacy Jones, previously a drummer for Veruca Salt and Letters to Cleo, put the band together with guitarist Jamie Arentzen, bassist Drew Parsons and drummer Brian Nolan.

Their self-titled debut arrived in 2001, produced by Bob Rock, reaching the Billboard 200 and topping the Heatseekers chart. Its single "Flavor of the Weak" climbed the Hot Modern Rock Tracks and Hot 100 charts, and the band won a Rising Star award at the 2001 Boston Music Awards.

The second album, The Art of Losing, followed in 2003, produced by Nick Launay and led by the singles "The Art of Losing" and "The Breakup Song," the latter featured on the Freaky Friday soundtrack. It sold less than its predecessor, and the band was subsequently dropped by Island Records.

They relocated to Los Angeles and rebuilt their sound with producer Butch Walker for Hearts on Parade, released in 2005, then toured heavily in Japan and the United States. Further albums arrived sporadically afterward: Fight the Frequency in 2010, Blood & Lemonade in 2014 on Rude Records, and the Anywhere Else but Here EP in 2020.

The band's music pairs distorted power-chord riffs with melodic choruses and vocal harmonies, drawing as much on 1990s alternative rock as on punk. They have continued to record and tour intermittently since, while Jones has also worked as a musical director for other artists.
