4Ft Fingers
Channel Islands ska-punk veterans back together for the festival circuit — high-tempo, grin-first punk built for a beery mass singalong among the UK scene faithful.
4ft Fingers formed in Cheltenham, England, in 1996, going by earlier names such as Subterfudge, West Bay Trash and The Drones before settling on their present name in 1998. The name refers to guitarist Rob Crebbin's large hands, compared by bandmates to an old rubber bat toy that sat on top of a television.
The original 1998 lineup paired Crebbin and Tom Saunders on guitars and vocals with Andy White on bass and Dave Humphries on drums. The band came up through a mid-1990s Cheltenham punk circuit built around venues like The Attic and the Axiom, supporting touring acts such as Snuff, Mad Caddies, Goober Patrol and Capdown.
Their sound stayed fast and melodic throughout, with shouted group vocals over rapid tempos, occasionally widened with horns, as on the early track "Hopeless Romantic". Debut album At Your Convenience appeared in 2001 on Jamdown Records, followed by a 140-date UK tour that led to a deal with Golf Records.
From Hero to Zero followed in 2002, and A Cause for Concern in 2004, both backed by UK and European touring alongside bands including Dead Kennedys, The Damned, Voodoo Glow Skulls and Skindred, plus a first US tour. A fourth album, New Beginnings of Old Stories, arrived in 2008 after several lineup changes.
The band paused and returned repeatedly through the 2010s, playing a "Last Man Standing" run of UK shows in 2012 and reconvening again in 2017, when a new bassist joined after founding member Dougie had moved to Australia.
