Deliberately obnoxious, biker-adjacent punk that got its debut single seized under UK obscenity law — 'So What' remains the filthy standard Metallica couldn't resist covering.

Anti Nowhere League formed in Tunbridge Wells, England, in 1979, fronted by vocalist Animal alongside guitarist Magoo. They emerged in the second wave of UK punk, cultivating a leather-clad, motorcycle-gang image and a confrontational, deliberately crude lyrical approach.

Their 1981 debut single paired a cover of Ralph McTell's "Streets of London" with "So What", the latter causing copies to be seized by police on obscenity grounds. Metallica's cover of "So What" later gave the song a much wider audience. The band's albums include We Are... The League, and they have continued to perform and record over subsequent decades.
