Philly band swinging between shoegaze tenderness and full-throated hardcore, often inside one song — catharsis with total dynamic control.

Mannequin Pussy started in Philadelphia in 2010 as a two-piece, Marisa Dabice on guitar and vocals alongside drummer Athanasios Paul. The lineup shifted over the following years, eventually settling into the group now built around Dabice, drummer Kaleen Reading, bassist and vocalist Colins Regisford and guitarist Maxine Steen, with multi-instrumentalist Carolyn Haynes joining for live shows.

Their records move between short, abrasive hardcore-leaning tracks and slower, melodic songs with shoegaze and indie-pop textures, frequently shifting between the two within a single track. That contrast has held from their earliest releases through to their most recent work, giving the band a reputation for total dynamic control rather than sticking to one register.

Albums including Patience and Perfect Storm sharpened that contrast, arriving after the band moved from Tiny Engines to Epitaph Records in 2019. Their catalogue now runs to four full-length albums, the most recent being I Got Heaven, released in 2024.

The band has drawn attention for the emotional directness of Dabice's writing, and the title track from their 2016 album Romantic was ranked among Rolling Stone's best songs of that year. Live, they remain known for sets that swing hard between the quiet and loud ends of the catalogue.
