Alex G
Bedroom-recorded songs that curdle in beautiful ways — pitch-shifted vocals, folk melodies, and lyrics that never explain themselves, from indie rock's most quietly influential songwriter of the past decade.
Alex G is the recording name of Alex Giannascoli, a songwriter from the Philadelphia area who began self-releasing albums on Bandcamp as a teenager before signing to Domino. His music grew out of home recording, and the rough edges of that process — tape hiss, abrupt edits, pitch-shifted and sped-up vocals — remain part of the sound even as the productions have grown more detailed.
The songs draw on indie rock, country and folk, often built around plain melodies and oblique, unresolved lyrics sung in character. Albums including 'Rocket', 'House of Sugar' and 'God Save the Animals' brought wider attention, and he contributed to the soundtrack of Frank Ocean's 'Blonde' and later scored films for director Jane Schoenbrun. He tours with a full band.
