Cleveland's literate gruff-melodic band, threading emo warmth through punk drive — understated, quietly essential, and beloved by everyone who's caught them.

Signals Midwest formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2008, working in a style that sits between melodic punk, emo and the gruff-voiced Midwestern rock tradition. The songs favor interlocking guitar lines and shifting tempos, with lyrics that stay observational and place-specific rather than abstract.

The band self-released its debut, Burn the Blueprints, in 2009, then signed to Tiny Engines for Latitudes and Longitudes in 2011, the same year as a split release with Shady Ave. Light on the Lake followed in 2013 and At This Age in 2016, both also on Tiny Engines.

Signals Midwest moved to Lauren Records for the Pin EP in 2019, previewed by the track "Your New Old Apartment," and for a fifth full-length, Dent, in 2022. The group built its following mainly through touring and word of mouth rather than radio or wider press attention.

Max Stern's vocals and songwriting remain central to the band, alongside bassist Ryan Williamson, rhythm guitarist Jeff Russell and drummer Steve Gibson, who also contributes backing vocals. Loren Shumaker played bass in the band's earlier years.
