Good Riddance formed in Santa Cruz, California, in 1986, and became one of the defining melodic hardcore bands on Fat Wreck Chords, the label that released the bulk of their catalogue. Vocalist Russ Rankin has fronted the group throughout.
Their sound pairs fast, aggressive hardcore punk with melodic guitar leads and clean vocal hooks, and their lyrics have consistently addressed political and social themes — a directness that set them apart from the more comic strain of 1990s California punk. The band broke up in the middle of the 2000s and later reunited, returning to touring and recording.
