Drain
Sunny California hardcore that treats a circle pit as a party rather than a fight — the scene's most reliably grinning live band.
DRAIN began in 2014 when drummer Tim Flegal and a handful of fellow University of California, Santa Cruz students started playing together without a fixed style. The band's direction sharpened in 2015 with the arrival of vocalist Sammy Ciaramitaro and bassist Cody Chavez, who soon switched to guitar, pushing the group toward crossover thrash.
Their songs pair fast, riff-driven hardcore with the tempo and gloss of late-1980s Bay Area thrash metal, citing influences such as Dark Angel, Exhorder, Slayer, Vio-lence and Testament alongside California hardcore acts like Black Flag. Where much of that lineage runs grim, DRAIN keeps a bright, unserious streak, favoring breakdowns and circle-pit energy over menace, an approach that has become the band's signature.
Early on, the band released two demos and two EPs, including Over Thinking in 2016 and Time Enough at Last in 2017, before signing to Revelation Records. Their debut full-length, California Cursed, followed in 2020, cementing the crossover thrash direction Ciaramitaro and Chavez had pushed the band toward five years earlier.
DRAIN's relentless touring and chaotic, good-natured live shows helped it become one of the hardcore bands that broke to a wider audience in the early 2020s; The New York Times later credited the group as a driving force behind that scene's renaissance. Second album Living Proof arrived in 2023, followed by headlining tours across the United States and Europe, and a further album, ...Is Your Friend, released in November 2025.
